Silver-Spoon Assessment

1) What is your reaction to the text you just read?

I found the first two chapters of  Silver-Spoon to be very entertaining for its interesting setting, where the protagonist finds himself at a school full of people that he feels are completely different from him due to their passion in farm/agriculture-related studies. His reason for being in this situation not yet revealed (at least with as far as I have read), makes me (and all the other characters, really) wonder why he is in this school in the first place.
As someone who grew up in a family familiar with farming, its really humorous to see the protagonist's shocked reactions to things that I (and anyone familiar with this sort of subject) have grown up to understand. I really enjoy how this manga shows that even though these students are not 'book-smart', like the protagonist, they are incredibly adept at what they do and are still knowledgeable about farming and other related subjects.

2) What connections did you make with this story? Discuss the elements of the work with which you were able to connect.

Stories where the main character is put into a setting that they are not comfortable or familiar with are often relatable in various ways. In this case, it honestly reminded me a lot of when I first came to Ringling, because it seemed as if everyone here knew what they wanted to do with themselves as freshman- and I was just there to figure it all out, hoping that my earlier studies in art would give me an upper-hand. In the case of Silver-Spoon, the protagonist finds himself in a similar situation, where even despite him expecting to have the upper-hand, because unlike everyone else there, he is 'book-smart', he clearly has so much more to learn than everyone else at the school. And more than that, the story continually teases at the idea that he also has more to learn about himself than anyone else as well, by showing all the other characters so easily tell each other their dreams- while the protagonist struggles to do so.

3) What changes would you make to this story into another medium? What medium would you use?

While Silver-Spoon does already have an anime adaptation- I have not seen it, so regardless of that, I'm going to describe how I would change it to fit an episodic animated format.
The manga seems to be quite fast-paced already, which is normal for animation, however the first chapter introduces multiple characters very quickly- only with brief lines of dialogue. With animation, giving the characters more time and personality with their movements/voice-lines would do a lot to push them to be more unique. Additionally, there could be less time given to the long explanations for certain farm-related things- and more time given to the protagonist learning these things through action (show, not tell)!
